Hungry cat gets head stuck in pet food can

Staff at a Scottish animal rescue centre were amazed when a lost cat found its way there - despite having its head stuck in a food can.
The female cat walked into the Scottish SPCA's Wildlife Rescue Centre in Middlebank, Fife, with her head wedged in an empty pet food tin.
After the can was carefully removed she was checked over. She has now been taken to the Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Balerno, Edinburgh.
"Luckily no damage was done and the little cat was very pleased to be freed from the discomfort that comes with having your head stuck inside a tin can," said Colin Seddon, Scottish SPCA Wildlife Rescue Centre manager.
"We think it's likely that she was scavenging and came across this discarded tin of cat food. She may have got the can stuck on her head and then became disorientated. It's lucky she wasn't hit by a car.
"This incident illustrates that litter can pose a threat to both wild and domestic animals. We always encourage people to make sure they bag and bin their rubbish, it could save an animal's life."
The cat was wearing a distinctive collar printed with green cat's eyes.

"According to a comment on the STV (Scottish TV) website, the cat's owner has contacted the SSPCA & is very glad to have her back. Apparently she had been missing for 12 days. I take back what I said in my previous comment - the little lass had been missing for several days before she found the SSPCA Centre."

"I've seen this story in a few places today. Apparently she was in good condition and wearing a collar. I can't help wondering whether the cat had a good home nearby and was just having a romp outside for a while (as cats do).
Posted by: SolarFlareShe was unfortunate to have the mishap with the tin and well done to the Scottish SPCA for freeing her from it. However, I'm not sure whether they did the right thing in assuming she would not be able to find her way home and in transporting her to an Edinburgh cattery. If she had not had the accident with the tin she would not have been seen to have been in need by the SSPCA and would probably have made her own way home when she was ready. There may be a very distraught owner going frantic in the vicinity of the SSPCA centre right now.
