Laura Ward, pet nutritionist at natural dog food brand Green Pantry, warns of the dangers of feeding your pets human treats.
The fundamental issue with giving your dog human treats is the high salt concentration and calorific nature of human food, coupled with the worsening weather can put additional strain on your pets immune system.
Laura said: “Always avoid giving your dog human food as a treat. Highly processed snacks, fatty foods, and sugary treats are unsuitable for dogs, and they can often contain toxic ingredients too.”
What to prioritise when buying dog treats:
• Short, recognisable ingredient lists
• Natural sources of protein
• No artificial colours or preservatives
• Low fat and low sugar
• Added functional benefits such as omega oils, fibre and antioxidants.
“Dog treats should do more than taste good, they should boost your dog’s health too. Often the ingredients in snacks we consume are inappropriate for dogs and include things like raisins, chocolate and sweeteners.” Said Laura.
